The challenges facing the new UN Secretary-General
On September 5th, all 15 ambassadors in the UN Security Council selected António Guterres as the next UN Secretary-General in a rare sign of unity. This was remarkable given the strong demands for a woman and an Eastern European to be Secretary-General. Some heralded his selection as a victory for a more open, inclusive and meritocratic election process. After all, Guterres has considerable experience: he was previously Prime Minister of Portugal and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Yet campaigners for a female Secretary-General called it ‘a disaster for equal rights and gender equality’ as there were seven female candidates who had considerable experience but were not ‘seriously considered’. This panel, which will be in English language, discusses the challenges Guterres has to face – from Syria and the refugee crisis to climate change and peacekeeping – and looks at the selection process for the UNSG, which was more transparent than ever before.
